Activity 1
Be careful not to describe all families as only having a mother, father, and children. Emphasize a family as a group of people, usually related, who live and work together to make their home a good place to live.

To prevent students from placing all the stickers in their books too quickly, have each student hold up their book when they have finished one page. Wait until everyone is finished, then read the next verse aloud together. Continue on in the same manner with each page.

Activity 2
Add “love” as a fourth need. You can even make a flash card with a big heart on it to use with the NEED/WANT activity. If time allows, have the students use their flash cards again as you point to additional pictures on the poster.

Discussing the diploma can be confusing, since it is not food, clothing or shelter, but is described as something we might need. Some people do live without finishing high school, but they may be limited in the jobs they can do and the amount of money they can earn. With a good job, we can get the things we need to live and more of the things that we want as well.

Activity 3

Instead of drawing a picture of someone the students know who works, then can draw pictures of themselves working in a field in which they are interested. This opens the door for discussion on what type of education will be required in order to have that job in the future.

Activity 4
Depending on the class behavior and size, it might work best to hang the map in the front of the room and have the kids stay at their desks for the discussion. Bring masking tape and have the students tape the symbols to the map.

Activity 5

You can demonstrate the buying power of each piece of money by bringing a supply of an item such as pencils. Set a price for each pencil then exhibit how many pencils each coin or bill would purchase. You might choose to incorporate the “enhanced activity” at this time.
