JA Business Week students experience Good Times & great success

JA Business Week students show off their frozen treat, \What could be sweeter than doing something really fun, learning a lot, and then getting paid for it? That’s exactly what seven enterprising local high school students are experiencing right now, as they reap the rewards for their entrepreneurial efforts put forth during the 2007 JA Business Week.

Business Week is JA’sannual week-long business and leadership program that gives students the opportunity to experience life in the real business world and learn from over 100 professional volunteers in an “Apprentice” -style environment. Throughout this one-of-a-kind summer program, hosted at Johnson & Wales University in June, 10 teams of students competed to see who could create the most enticing Halloween-inspired Spoonbender flavor for Good Times Burgers & Frozen Custard. Teams were tasked with creating a tantalizing frozen treat, all while adhering to real Good Times business development parameters, such as budget, product identity standards, marketing, and mix of ingredients. In the end, Black Kat, a delicious blend of vanilla frozen custard with cappucinno syrup, hot fudge and Kit Kat bars mixed in, wowed the judges and won first prize.

But the fun hasn’t stop there. During the month of October, 45 Good Times locations throughout Colorado have been offering this student-created Spoonbender flavor as a special menu item, with 10% of the month’s Black Kat proceeds going directly to the business-savvy students who created the frozen concoction.

When asked to identify the best part of the experience, most of the students say they thoroughly enjoy driving by Good Times and seeing the signs advertising Black Kat

Thanks to the popularity of their creamy concoction, these seven students have virtually reached local celebrity status. Check out the Black Kat crew on 9News, where they dished about the Spoonbender experience with news reporter Gregg Moss on Tuesday, October 16th - to view the video, click here. You can also ready about them in the Denver Post, the Columbine Courier, and La Voz. Congratulations, Black Kat team, on a job well done!
