Spring JA Stock Market Challenge a Success

Kent Clark of Charles Schwab kicks off JA’s 2017 Spring Stock Market Challenge

Rock Canyon High School students continued their school’s winning streak at the 2017 JA Stock Market Challenge on April 6 and 7 at Charles Schwab’s corporate headquarters in Lone Tree. A team from Rock Canyon took home a first place trophy, along with student teams from Broomfield High School and West Early College.

Six hundred and thirty-seven students from 25 different schools participated in the spring 2017 event, thanks in large part to the 56 enthusiastic employee volunteers from Charles Schwab.

“This is a fantastic exercise to pique students’ interest in the potential power of investing,” said Kent Clark, senior vice president of client services & support at Charles Schwab. “While it doesn’t reflect our core approach to long-term investing and our philosophy of building and maintaining an investing strategy over many years, the competition is thought-provoking and engaging for the students, as well as for our employees, who help bring it to life.”

The JA Stock Market Challenge is a live simulation game featuring teams of high school students who compete to see who can grow their initial $500,000 investment into the largest net worth “mock” stock portfolio. To prepare for the competition, students participate in JA Take Stock in Your Future, two 45-minute classroom lessons about individual equities and the impact of the economy, geopolitical events and market sentiment on the stock market. JA hosts three Stock Market Challenge events for students each year – two in the Denver Metro area and one in Fort Collins. For more information about the JA Stock Market Challenge, click here.
